All of our candles are handpoured in small batches by our artisan. We pride ourselves in being a small company with no intention of moving towards machine based processes. Candle Sand
How to use my candle sand?
To use your Candles & Jo Candle Sand, start by selecting a container that can preferably withstand a little bit of heat. You can then pour your sand into the container, and place one or more wicks into it, leaving only 1cm of wick apparent above the sand. You can then enjoy your candle sand. When you are ready to turn it off, snuff the wick. A few hours later, you can take out the wick from the sand and place a new one in its place.
Pro Tip: To maximize the use of your wicks, you can also trim the wick under the wax disk and re-use it for the next burn instead of using a whole new wick!
Container Candles
How should I care for my container candle?
When lighting your candle for the first time, burn the candle until wax melt across the entire surface. This will prevent tunnelling and create an even burn for the duration of the candle's life.
In order to maximize burning time, always trim the wick to 3mm before burning. For your safety, do not light the candle for longer than 3 hours at a time, and do not light it and leave the room.
My candle has an uneven surface, is frosty or bumpy. Is this normal?
Absolutely! Vegetable wax candles tend to have imperfect surfaces, such as frosting, cristallisation and uneven surfaces. Not to worry, this does not affect the performance of the candle whatsoever. This is even proof that no parrafin is used within our products.
There is a tunnel in my candle, and lots of wax is stuck to the sides of the jar. What can I do?
Candles & Jo container candles are thoroughly tested in order for you to enjoy a long lasting burn that consumes all of the wax in the jar. Wax is considered to have 'wax memory', meaning that whoever you burn it, it will continue to burn. It is therefore important, that at least for the first burn, you make sure that you light the candle long enough for it to create a pool of melted wax that goes from side to side of the jar, covering the whole jar.
In case your candle does tunnel, our PRO tip is to wrap some tinfoil around the candle, leaving an opening of 3 cm above the candle. Carefully light the candle, and let it burn for a couple of hours. Repeat as necessary. Once the tunneling disappears, please remove the tinfoil and light the candle per usual.
What happens if i don't trim my wick?
Not trimming your wicks causes the candle to burn the wax faster than intennded. In turn, this high combustion will create more soot, which will make your candle jar dirty, and the burn unpleasant. It will definitely affect the quality of your candle. Moreover, not trimming your wick after it has been used, and lighting it as is, means that you are actually burning the black soot that is on your wick.
Pillar Candles
How should I care for my pillar candle?
Our pillar candles are mostly sold as decoWhen lighting your candle, make sure that you trim the wick to maximum 0.5cm before burning. Make sure it is on a plate as there is a chance that it will drip on the surface. In case the drippings stick to the surface, place your tray or candle plate in the freezer. Since our wax is vegetable based, it will contract and unstick.
For your safety, do not light pillar candles for more than 2 hours at a time, and do not light it and leave the room.
Wax Melts
How to use my wax melts?
Place a single wax melt in the well of your electric wax melt warmer or ceramic dish of your wax burner and light an unscented tealight below. Once the wax is warm, it will melt and spread fragrance. Add more melts if needed.
To change the wax melts to another scent, you can turn on your warmer for a moment and remove the excess wax as it will lift from the ceramic surface. If you are not in a hurry, you can also place your melter in the freezer as the wax will contract and release from the melter.
How to store my wax melts?
Wax melts are sensitive to light and temperature, you can avoid your wax melts from cracking and melting by storing in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight.
